I am happy with my eye care. I don’t like surveys. I buy a light bulb at Aubuchon’s and they want to know how it compares with other lightbulbs I have owned. I buy paper clips at Staples and they want to know if I am happy with my purchase. So, I really didn’t want to take your survey. I had an eye exam. It was fine. So, as invited, I texted STOP to opt out and I got scolded. “WARNING: You have opted out of ALL txt messages including appointment reminders….” OK. Let’s do it the old fashioned way. You tell me when the appointment is and I’ll put it on my calendar. If there’s a problem, too many surveys for example, I’ll let you know.

Despite an 8:30 appointment, I sat waiting in the exam room for 45 minutes after the tech departed. My last visit involved the same experience. A complaint both times elicited the same “that’s the way it goes” shrug of a response. This disregard for patient time is disrespectful. I don’t intend to return.

The providers are great, but their customer service/admin at the front desk should not be allowed to interact with the public. We are reviewing our options for care elsewhere as a family of four that need eye care. One "customer service" person on the booking side and one "customer service" on the frames side are horrendously rude with us. They are not flexible with booking appointments, they are huffy when asked clarifying questions; and on the frames side, gave us a price breakdown on progressive lenses that excluded frames because they assumed we couldn't afford frames in addition to the lenses. We are not the only ones experiencing this insulting customer "service" and it has repeatedly left us dissuaded from staying under the providers' care. While we understand that good help might be hard to find these days, these two individuals are not worth keeping on. The evaluation would be high for the providers, but 0 for customer service. Other staff, especially Jeffrey, are courteous and kind.

The staff, secretaries, and Doctor(s) were very pleasant, courteous, and helpful, and the overall experience was great. My only complaint is that I was supposed to get contacts and I was out of contacts and they did not give me any. When I left, they told me they had to order them and they would be in within a week, it’s over three weeks now and I’ve talked to them twice and still don’t have them.

The doctor assistant were wonderful. Id warn folks tho that your billing and charging system is not great. A consumer should know what the costs are at checkout. I scheduled my appointment because i was having trouble with my contacts. I was pretty clear about that. It was quicker to get glasses online than to get an appointment. I had difficulty adjusting to the new glasses, so i made an appointment with Dr King to go over the new glasses, and what might be the issue with them and my contacts. I Did not get the doctor i requested. Nobody knew why i was there, and it turned out they were looking to do an annual eye exam. I did not get much new information. It was a wasted visit. Also, i did not like the countdown timer on the doctor’s watch. Made me feel rushed.

Excellent clinical and support staff. [Constructive criticism: the lovely gentleman who reviewed my chart had no name tag I could see. It is nice to know the name and title of the person with you. Dr. Corbitt gives very satisfactory answers to my numerous questions. Two things, however, I would point out: she left the room for over 15 minutes without explanation, or apology for the length of time, when she returned. It goes a long way with a patient when you give them an understanding of what to expect. (I don’t think it was to let the eye drops action take effect, as she did some examining within minutes of administering them, prior to leaving for that stretch of time.).Also, I was a bit taken aback when at checkout and making my next appointment I was told it would be with another provider, since she was leaving the practice. There may be reasons for her not telling me at the close of our appointment, but I would have liked the closure, and would suggest she give this courtesy to her patients].

I had an excellent experience with the first person who took me through a few tests before seeing the doctor. I believe his name was Jeffrey and he was very kind and friendly. The doctor seemed a little rushed but I guess I got what I needed. The front desk staff is the reason I wouldn't recommend Shippee. This was my first time using my vision insurance. I made the mistake of not checking if Shippee was in network which it turned out you aren't. But when I handed my MVP card to the front desk staff before my exam, she didn't tell me my insurance was not accepted, she simply handed it back to me, therefore I assumed she understood I THOUGHT I had insurance coverage and her silence meant I was good to go...why else would I hand her my card? It wasn't until I checked out that she informed the other woman checking me out that they didn't accept eye med (through MVP) and I owed $153! It felt really crappy and back-handed and sneaky. I get that you make more $ from cash patients than insurance and damn straight I wouldn't have stayed if I knew my insurance wasn't accepted but what a gross way to do business. When will doctors be on the side of their patients by being absolutely transparent and upfront? Is it that hard to care about your patients and take an extra minute to make sure everyone is on the same page when it comes to insurance and payments?

I like the care that I receive here very much. People are kind and knowledgeable. My main issue is with the annual fee for using contact lenses. I already have to spend so much money on contacts, and that extra fee is extremely off-putting. Thirty dollars impacts my monthly budget, and it is already going to be a stretch to pay for contacts

I really enjoyed service I received from the gentleman who checked me in before the Doctor showed up. Otherwise, I am not very happy with lack of transparency the clinic has when billing (I was charged for the medical appt instead of routine eye exam, and now I am very anxious my insurance will refuse to cover it). On top, I was charged $40 out of pocket for eye glass prescriprion when I already had ongoing eye prescription). Additionally, the ladies at the front desk were not engaged (I dont think they really listened) and did not provide with prescription paperwork in the end -- the whole reason why I came for an exam, so that I am able to purchase contact lenses. In summary, this practice seems to make it more complicated that it should be when it comes to regular eye/contact lens exam that I was looking to get. I understand they need to make money, but not all patients are rich with support like many Vermonters are. I am solo in this whole country and it sucks to spend hard earned money on things that I dont need (eye glass prescription). Now Im broke and anxious about my upcoming bill.

I found Dr. Shippee to be friendly, very knowledgeable, and refreshingly candid. He had a way of making me feel comfortable as he asked me the various eye exam questions in a very clear way. My only concern that only occurred to me after the appointment was that, as I recall, he was not wearing a mask (which perhaps is not required these days, for all I know). The flip side of this is that it is really nice to see a health provider's face! When I think about it, maybe that sense of connection, partly generated by his NOT wearing a mask, outweighs my concerns about his not wearing a mask. Again, his doctor-patient manner was excellent. One small suggestion would be that when the staff hand out the plastic sunglasses that they invite folks to return them for re-use by other patients, to decrease the chances of them being thrown in the trash afterwards. BTW, when I wore the sunglasses over my regular distance glasses for driving, the part that goes over the ears cut into my skin (not really actually cut in but hurt a little bit as if they were close to cutting in, if you follow).

I was skeptical about getting my first pair of glasses, but my experience cannot have been better. Yes, the setting and Doctor Gillette were wonderful but so was everything and everybody else. Every question was answered, tests were repeated, all to get my glasses perfect. From Tiffany and Deb, the glasses builders, to Sara and Frank, the preliminary workers, I was treated with the sort of deeply personal service that is hard to find these days. We need that from each other and the staff at the Shippee office in Montpelier, Vermont have never failed to give me what I need. From the front desk to the dr to the optician, I got great care, lots of communication explaining everything and was treated as a special guest, not just another patient/customer. I am a former optician and got great suggestions from my optician (I forgot her name I'm so sorry) but she went searching in the back room for different colors for frames and with her, I went a totally different direction and am glad I did. Your office is a total rip-off - you need to address the issue of reimbursment with VSP and stop trying to bill patient's medical for a routine eye exam. We know that you are billing the health insurance because they will pay you more- PLUS you will get more from the patient for a "Specialist" Visit than a $20 co pay through VSP. Don't let your patients suffer because you can't be bothered renegotiate the contract with VSP.

I really love how open the waiting room is. When i went ir would have been helpful to have more than one person at the reception desk. The person there was constantly on the phone and there were people waiting to check in. There were definitely staff enough to be at the desk just seemed like maybe that wasn't "their role". It would have also been nice to know that VSP was no longer accepted by the provider before I went to my appointment since my insurance was on file.

When the eye specialist dialate's the patient's eyes, it would be nice for them to consider the experience of the patient. I came out into the front room which was full of glare off of car windows in the mid-day June sun. I mentioned to Shippee representatives that I was uncomfortable, but there was no response. They didn't even issue cheap sunglasses, when I told them I needed sunglasses. It felt like the medical approach to eye care is being done without awareness of the actual experience of the patient. I struggled to go two block, disoriented, to get sunglasses from a local store.

The staff is helpful and the optometrist is great! One thing that I would say could be improved is, while you are waiting for your eyes to dilate in a darkened room, when you can’t read, having some nice soothing music piped in would be nice. Like instrumental flute or guitar or something calming. It takes a while for the eyes to dilate, so if you are not someone who meditates or gets up and does some calisthenics like I did, you’re probably going to be pretty bored sitting in there. So music would be nice. Other than that it’s a great experience!

Not for online review, but I really had to wait a long time between intake and seeing the doctor. I would hav answered Questions 5-8 as BNA if that choice had been offered. Instead, I answered based on prior visits when these were applicable and not as good as they should have been. However, for the most part, these less than satisfactory experiences were not with the current staff, so the middling answers reflect the old issues dragging down what I'm hoping will be the case with the new staff.

I do have a couple of comments to share. The first is that when I arrived I was asked whether I had my insurance card with me. I said I did not. My record should show that I have VSP as insurance. Only after my appointment, while talking with other staff regarding eyeglasses and that I was interested in new frames and lenses as I was eligible through my VSP insurance, did I learn that you had stop taking VSP insurance as of Feb. 2. . This fact was not mentioned to me when I made the appointment, when I checked in, only after my appointment. I feel I should have been made aware of this when I booked the appointment. My second comment is that while the doctor was very professional, there was no comment or conversation with me regarding my eye health after examination. I was just told to "follow me" to meet with the optometrist. I think it is important to discuss findings, whether bad or good, with the patient. It was also not shared with me that my prescription had changed by a little bit. This information was also told to me by the optometrist. Needless to say I felt a little disappointed with my appointment.

My eye doctor had just retired and upon recommendation of my PCP, I had made a new patient appointment with Shippee Family Eye Care for six months from my last appointment. It was the week before Christmas and I was having issues with red eye, possibly related to my medication, but it was not resolving. The folks at Shippee kindly made the appointment to see me for an acute care appointment before I was even seen first time. I carried my chart from previous doc and Dr. King gave me a thorough examination and reassured me that the issue would resolve, albeit slowly. Everyone was very pleasant and efficient. It was a great relief to have the issue cared for as well as to know that I have a wonderful facility for continued eye care.

When my husband and I first started receiving eye care from the Shippee office for our eye care, we were seen my Dr. Karena Shippee. It was quite a while ago. It was before she became pregnant with her son and at the other location in Montpelier. It was always a very positive experience. We really liked her. At my first visit at their current location, (which was 3 - 4 years ago, I believe) I was seen my a different optical doctor who walked into the examination room without introducing themself to me or even smiling or looking up to greet me at all. I introduced myself to them first. It should've been the doctor who greeted and welcomed me as a patient. (It was NOT doctor Karena Shippee. She is awesome!!!!) I kind of felt more like a number rather than a patient. It was a rather cold reception. I feel that the examination was thorough, but the "chairside manner" was lacking. My most recent visit however, was much better. There was immediate eye contact and with a smile and I felt like a valued patient. My exam was very pleasant and all of my questions were answered in a relaxed and professional manner. I will continue to seek optical care from Shippee Family Eye Care. The front desk staff is wonderful and the office is bright and welcoming.

I've never left a review before today. I had an appt at Shippee in Montpelier last Thursday, it's the second year I've been a patient there. I've been having regular annual eye exams (or more than once a year) since I was 10 -- almost 40 years ago. I have never had an appt as disconcerting as the one on Thursday. No one told me I was not going to be seeing the doctor I had last time (and I've never had an office just change doctors without tell me); when the doctor arrived they were aloof, checked the computer monitor constantly, made little eye contact, did not warn me about what was going to happen next (even when an instrument was almost in my eye ball) and forced me to sit back and ask the doctor to explain to me what was happening. After my pupils were dilated and eyes were checked the doctor wrote something on the computer and again I was not told ANYTHING about my own eyes and had to ask. Then, at the end, I was asked if I had any questions and I had to initiate the conversation about ordering more contact lenses even though that was the reason for the appt. The entire time I felt like the doctor wanted to be anywhere but this exam. I will not be returning.

Just wanted to say that Dr Guelette was great! He solved an eye problem that I have had for years, that an ophthalmologist and another optometrist had no clue about! (It was a simple answer, too, that he came up with in seconds! Definitely lowers my confidence in that ophthalmologist that i saw!!) His explanations were very thorough and clear. I recommended him to my mother-in-law. She saw him and had the same reaction; she got answers to questions that had been basically ignored by other eye professionals that she had seen after her cataract surgery. She said that even the assistant, who saw her first, gave her better answers than she had gotten elsewhere! I, too, had a very thorough assistant, who I ultimately told of my lingering eye problem that I thought was hopeless, because she was so probing with my medical history. Great team!! The only problem I had was, back if Feb I had to re-schedule because of a migraine, and your computers were down, so i was promised a call back, which i never got. I did get a reminder card, however, so i called. But that's understandable, because we rely so completely on computers!

My biggest complaint is that neither I nor my partner were offered sunglasses after having our eyes dilated. I asked the doctor if I would be okay to drive and was assured that I would be fine as it was overcast at the time. The clouds broke and I struggled with my vision, having to drive with one eye closed, switching back and forth, eyes watering the entire drive, creating a dangerous and very uncomfortable situation. Also, it seems common practice these days for medical professionals to ask the patient if they have any questions. As the patient, I don't know what questions to ask. I have an expectation of the doctor to tell me about my health, not having to extract that information from him/her through a line of questioning.

The facility, doctor and staff were terrific. However, the visit took far longer than expected. I arrived at 11:20 a.m. for an 11:30 appointment, and did not leave until 12:57 p.m. I know the precise time because I got a parking ticket, thinking 1 hour would be sufficient for a routine eye exam. Despite that, I will continue to patronize this provider, but will adjust my schedule accordingly.

The exam was very ininformative. The doctor did not tell me the condition of my eyes, if they were healthy or what conditions I should be wary of. When I asked about certain symptoms I was experiencing, then he started to tell me, very briefly and without explanation that I had early stage catarax and did not dxplain what that meant, where my eyes were going etc. Just you have catarax, now go get out of my office. I asked about light sensitivity then he told me there was scarring on my eyes. No additionaly information, for all I know I am going blind, but he could be bothered to tell me how my eyes, and I was the first patient of the day. Just terrible at telling the patient anything. Felt like i was a machine on an assembly - no care, no explanation, just get through the test and get out of my office. Very poor skills.

My only critique is that despite showing up early for my appointment I still didn't get seen for 15-20 min after my scheduled appointment, and then there were several points while in the exam that I was waiting for 5-10min. This may be typical from the exam portion, but it would also help to have those expectations laid when making the appointment, and then re-communicated upon arrival.

Poor communication. I was scheduled to come to the office to have new contacts fitted etc. Got to the office and waited for over 30 minutes only to be told that my contacts had not arrived and were in back order. That the staff neglected to call me and let me know that my contacts had not arrived resulted in the loss of over two hours from my work. To add insult to injury, I was then charged a “contact fee” when I received no contacts. By all rights, Shippee should have paid me for the time I lost from work on a wasted appointment.

Everyone seems nice, but when I had to be rescheduled I asked if there was something sooner and the woman didn’t even look and said no, even though my roommate had spoke to someone a few hours before and was given many much earlier options. And then I received a call the day of saying there was an opening, which is fine on its own. When I went in for the appointment I told the first woman I spoke with that I wanted to be measured for contacts and I saw her put it in the notes, but the optometrist never did it. I don’t know if she even read the notes, or maybe forgot. I’ve never done that before, so I didn’t know when it would be done until it was too late and I was being pushed out. They seem like really nice people but there is some miscommunication going on in the office.

They are always courteous. They answered the phone or returned your call in a timely manner. They do their best to fit you in based on your situation and are just very helpful in general right now they have great protocols in place for the pandemic and you feel safe the whole time.

Julie was extremely pleasant during the pre-exam tests. Dr. Corbitt was wonderful during the exam. Answered all of my questions thoroughly and kept me relaxed during the exam. They have a large selection of frames to choose from and the optician was also very helpful. I look forward to coming back here for many years.
