I was pleasantly surprised by my visit to Northern Virginia Doctors of Optometry this past weekend. I assumed that I would be in their office for two hours or more but the entire team was efficient, kind, knowledgeable, and worked to get me in and out in a timely manner. I wasn't rushed or made to feel as if I was unwelcome. My questions were answered and the clinical technician was really patience with me when I could not find the light in the machine that was checking the health of my eyes.

Northern Virginia Doctors of Optometry continue to provide top notch service, and especially under COVID-19 conditions! Getting an appointment was easy over the phone. Then I only had to wait a minute or two in my car outside before I was called in for my eye exam. All staff were wearing their masks properly. There was only one other customer selecting glasses as I walked through to the eye exam room, who was wearing a mask as well. The exam room someone was just finishing wiping down with alcohol before I was ushered in. The eye exam was very professional and personable. The doctor took care to ensure my eyes were in their best condition possible for my age (72) and that I understood completely what I was being told. And the prescription I was given is definitely an improvement over what I had before! It isn’t as strong in one eye either., which seems might be a possible benefit of the pandemic with not spending as much time staring at a computer! Denise was as ever the most caring and patient with me in selecting my new glasses. Thank you all for taking so much care to be safe and still providing friendly and professional service!!

I was a 1st time patient & the service was excellent from check-in to the exam with Dr. Giles. She was very in thorough in her exam - she answered all of the questions I had, & I didn't feel like she was rushing to the next patient. My only negative is that they didn't have a huge selection of designer frames, therefore i will be going some where else to actually buy my glasses - Overall I was very pleased with the service I received during my appointment - I highly recommend this office for your eye care needs.

Everyone with whom I dealt at NVDO in Alexandria was courteous, professional and competent. They were readily able to answer all my questions -- and I ask a lot of questions -- about the various tests, the machines used, the images taken of the back of my eyes. My exam at the Northern Virginia Doctors of Optometry was excellent! The technicians were so friendly, patient, thorough and caring, and Dr. Giles is OUTSTANDING!!! Dr. Giles alerted me several years ago that, although I was having no problems, I had signs of a serious eye disease. She referred me to an ophthalmologist, and, because of the early detection and later treatment, I have my vision! I am so grateful and feel fortunate to have found this office! I also learned how important it is to have regular eye exams!!!

I recently completed my comprehensive annual eye exam with NVDO-Alexandria Office and had the pleasure of having Dr. Linda Miller conduct the exam. She was very professional and pleasant to work with. As a mid-50's year old man, she asked the right questions on the state of my ocular health. I paid extra to have a retinal screening done and it provided Dr. Miller an inside look at my eyes to evaluate my visual acuity, binocularity, color and depth perception, muscle balance, astigmatism and peripheral vision. I am totally satisfied with the exam and feel like I have peace of mind thanks to Dr. Miller's assessment of my eyes.

As always, great care and personal attention. I moved 60 miles North of VA in 2011. I have since gotten a new physician, barber, dentist, dermatologist and the like, but still make the drive to see Dr. Miller and your staff for all of my optometry needs. The eye test with the blinking red dots is a pain in the backside, but I know it’s necessary. Dr. Miller is attentive, personal and obviously caring. I have never waited any length of time to be treated, even when arriving early.

I've been a patient of Dr. Smithson for years. I moved to Washington, DC 13 years ago and continue to see him at the Alexandria office for my yearly exam. He is thorough and answers all questions. When I had an issue that required an ophthalmologist I was referred to a doctor near my home in DC. Again, another excellent doctor. The front desk staff and opticians are friendly and helpful. Everyone explains options and costs so you are clear on out of pocket costs associated with a visit and/or glasses. Technicians are thorough and explain all the tests.

Let me start off by saying that you shouldn’t settle for less when it comes to quality vision care- and you won’t with Dr. Keith Smithson! I took my two children ages 7 and 5 to him (he’s the one who sees the little patients), and I left without words! He’s great with children! Oh my God! My son who’s the 7 year old, has ADHD and IS medicated, but when we arrived, his meds had worn off and he was utterly hyper but that was not an issue for Dr. Smithson. He was kind, patient, and RESPECTFUL to my son- he even played a game with him, made him laugh a lot and used terms that he could understand! Also, my 5 year old daughter has a speech delay and knows no letters, but he was able to run a test using pictures. He was also patient and respectful to her, on top of running several tests to check her eye muscle function! When all was done, he spoke to me clearly about both of their exams and made sure I understood the findings! My son needed glasses and my daughter needs to have her vision screened annually. Wow, what great service Dr. Smithson! Thank you a million times!

the visit was good, people are very friendly and helpful. I ordered some contact lens and later wanted to cancel part of the order (on a separate invoice). The person I talked to canceling was very rude and not helpful. I asked for a refund back to my credit card, he said I NEEDED to drive back to the office and present the card in person otherwise I can't get a refund.. I thought that was very unreasonable to ask me to do that instead of just refund my credit card. I did not question more, and said "thanks", then he hung up right away. The whole experience just made me feel like I am spending his money instead of my own money. I probably wouldn't go back to the office again.

The doctor was professional, the office clean and the staff courteous. My problem is that I was charged $55 for contact lenses fitting for contacts I wore to their office for which a previous doctor over a year ago fit and prescribed. I did t need this fitting. When I asked about the charge I was told my eyes may have changed in the last year...really? I should’ve been told about a $55 fee that insurance doesn’t cover but aside from that I feel taken advantage of and charged a superfluous fee for something I didn’t need. And at the end I wasn’t even given a pair of contacts....in all my years I’ve never walked out of an eye exam without at least a pair of contacts. I thought it was a cheap gesture.

I was extremely impressed with the office starting with my initial phone call. I was having issues with my left eye, and the young lady I spoke with felt it was very important for me to be seen that day, so she squeezed me into the schedule. My appointment went well. Everything stayed on schedule and the service was quick and efficient. However, I miss the easy and fun loving spirit of Dr. Bloom. The visits simply aren't the same. All business, though that it the purpose. Love the new machine which substitutes the old dilation process (Optus maybe??) and the young lady that ran that procedure was great.

Dr. Smithson is smart, efficient and focused, a little bit too much in a rush to consider alternatives or listen more closely to what the patient is saying. He is essentially clueless about cost, which is not acceptable or excusable. One feels the eye exam is really an entry point to a sales process that takes place on the floor and that is geared to extract as much money as possible from the patient. On the plus side -- waiting was minimized and the interactions (with four people -- technician, doctor, eye glass specialist and check-out) were smooth. One feels like a spectator, however, during the hand-offs. I could hear the technician brief the doctor outside the exam room, and sat as the doctor explained his interpretation of my needs to the eye glass specialist on the floor. Unfortunately, he hadn't really listened to me and his explanation was not really accurate, which I naturally found frustrating. One has to be alert to decline a $39 extra fee for unnecessary retina photographs. This is an irksome annual up-sell that ought to stop no matter how often it is recommended as a way to generate additional revenue in industry publications. Finally, even with insurance coverage, a pair of glasses can run $250 to $400, thanks to over-inflated frame costs and an inexplicable and non-transparent calculation process for determining allowable insurance coverage, cost sharing and so forth.

My wife and I spent about 3 hours here for eye exam and 4 pairs of glasses. We spent nearly $2000. The check-in, exam, and technician were great. However, we were very disappointed in the check out. The young African-American lady at the counter barely acknowledged us, even though we just spent $2000. Everything was wordless, even though we tried to make conversation. The only comment she made to us is when she told us we owed nearly $2000. After a great experience with the exam and technician, this left a very poor impression. While we will obviously come back to pick up our glasses, my wife and I are still mulling over if we would come back for contacts or recommend to others. Great first impression, very poor final impression.

Everything was excellent except for the check out . I would have appreciated not having to pay 100% before I receive the finished product. I told the cashier that I was extended that courtesy at my last appointment, ie, I only had to pay 50%. She said that's not how she knows to handle the process and since no manager was there I had to pay the entire amount of $600+ at that time.

This is at least my third pair of glasses from NVDO in Alexandria. I usually see Dr. Giles and she is very approachable, makes me feel comfortable with the exam and any questions I may have. This exam was overpriced and the optometrist tried to promote even more expensive tests such as dilation and photography without any known clinical need. We had run out of contact lenses and the office was unwilling to provide even one 2 week set to bridge us over since the prescription had just expired (even to get us through a few days), so we had to come rushing in on a Saturday morning to get a new prescription. The reception is particularly rude and unwelcoming. Considering that this office has discontinued some of its discounts and is charging practically twice what some others are, and charging 50% more for contacts than online prices, one would have expected a far better experience.

As usual the service from Dr. Smithson and the tech, Roy, was outstanding. Usually I work with Denise or Jim when getting fit for glasses, and they are as good as anyone could ask regarding quality service and an honest opinion, but inasmuch as they were busy, Roy more than adequately helped me out. It's always a pleasure visiting the store and I always receive a warm reception and excellent service from the moment I walk in until I leave. This visit was no exception.

Dr. Havish Bhalani was so supportive of my 16 year old son's concerns about contact lenses. He has a very bad astigmatism and all his concerns were explained and options were gone over for the best solution to Thomas' condition. We have been trying to find a solution for the past 4 years and now we have hope and for that I am grateful.

Your front desk staff at Alex location is always rude. It's either poor training or poor treatment by the doctors or basic incompetence, but a front desk staff that is friendly is always good business sense!

The wait time for my appointment was extreme. I didn't have time to get my glasses adjusted or look for new frames because it took almost 2 hours just to complete my eye exam appointment.

If the new retinal screening process may not be covered by insurance, the patient should be told this before the test is done, not afterward at checkout. The technician mentioned the price, but not that insurance may not cover it. As a patient, you assume insurance will cover that if it covers retinal dilation tests.

I could not be more pleased with my entire experience at NVDO. Dr. Briceno (unfortunately, just filling in at Alexandria) was amazing, and every aspect of the appt was handled with the utmost courtesy and professionalism. The person (didn't get her name) who assisted me with selecting and fitting my frames, and explaining my VSP coverage, was amazing as well. More than satisfied with everything and everyone connected with my appt. on 2-23. Thank you!

I like your practice with one important exception: You MUST to give each patient their prescription without them having to ask; however, you never do this, and it is REQUIRED by law. The whole staff was great made my son's first eye appointment experience great. They told him exactly what was going to happen. Dr Miller treated him real well. Staff helped him pick his glasses.

Our 17 year old son wore contact before his automobile accident. Now that he is in recovering from a traumatic brain injury, we needed to get his eyes examined even though he can not speak. Our son can write so after getting the preliminary prescription, Dr. Smithson had him write each letter he saw one at a time so the doctor could determine the prescription needed. Our son gave the visit a thumbs up.

I had a good experience though some items don't apply. Also there is a big gap between excellent and fair which makes survey completion challenging. Denise adjusted my glasses and explained something valuable. The tech was very efficient and pleasant as well! Kudos.
