The staff at Nilsen Eye Care Center in Powhatan were amazing. Each person I interacted with was very patient and kind. Dr. Dorgelah provided me with great feedback and made suggestions about care. She didn’t pressure me into getting any test done but shared her concerns. I would definitely recommend Nilsen Eye Center to my friends and family.

Dr Carter was very informative and taught me things I never knew about my eyes. This was my first time at the Powhatan location and it was just as great of an experience and atmosphere as the Courthouse location.

I love the people there. However, I bought 2 pairs of glasses & both pair had flaws in the lens. So I'm guessing it's most likely the lab that their using. I'm not to happy with that part because it takes twice as long to receive my new glasses. I'm seriously considering getting my glasses at Costco in the future. I'm going to see how this next time goes.

My family and ai have been patients of Nilsen eye care for over 15 years and have enjoyed the genuine kindness, warm and friendly atmosphere, professionalism and personalities of the staff. Some of which are no longer with the practice but the two who started the practice (Mr and Mrs Niilsen) have remained and worked together to make their offices the two of the best.

Please don’t take me as “that guy” who gives the highest ratings without thought on a survey. My responses are the result of having had one of the best health care encounters I’ve ever had, anywhere. Nilsen has cutting edge technology and the expertise to go along with it, and some of the friendliest caregivers and staff you could ever ask for. Dr. Jodi Vaughn moved her practice to Nilsen so that she could spend more time with her patients and get to know them. Her fulfillment of that desire manifested itself in a most pleasant visit. She explained everything, answered all questions, and eliminated the dread typically associated with an eye exam. The patience and helpfulness of the staff was more than I could have asked for. Without a doubt, I will be using Nilsen for all of my eye care needs going forward.

Everyone I came in contact with was super friendly. The staff and doctor made sure I understood everything due the exam process as well as recommendations. There’s no pressure to purchase unnecessary frames/lenses. All my options and a true recommendation based solely on my needs were provided. Everything was perfect except the hour wait before seeing the doctor. I arrived 15 minutes early and waited way too long. The Dr. was very nice and helpful but I was nearly late to a work appointment and had to reschedule the glass fitting because I was in the office two hours for a routine exam and didn’t get to try on glasses.

My single criticism is that there is a photograph on the exam room wall belonging to a female provider (not the one I saw) and her family clustered around a "Trump Winery" sign. It is clearly a political statement and one I hope to never see again. It is inappropriate to infuse politics into health care. The provider should take the photo home.

The care is quite professional. Dr. Carter explains issues very well, and is thorough. Her charges have really escalated since she moved to Nilsen Eye Care. I will probably never go there again. I was told what the charges would be....nothing like what I was charged. I needed a replacement RGP lens, so needed new measurements for it. $500---no, I could not possibly recommend.

The team members at Nilsen Eye Care West do a great job of making visitors and patients feel comfortable. They take their time and asked detailed questions to get to know the lifestyle and different needs a patient may have. They give a precise explanation of all charts and tests and completely explain what they are doing and looking for. They have an extremely helpful area where you can choose from a wide variety of frames and lenses. They are very patient and make sure that you get a comfortable, good looking, reliable pair of glasses.

I love Dr. Carter, but do not like this practice. My daughter was turned off last year by the way that she was treated and the lack of professionalism by the changes in this practice and will not return. I decided to try again because of Dr. Carter and can say from the moment that I walked in and was told to wear a mask was ridiculous. I am a public school teacher and that is an individual decision. It should be the same at the eye doctor where people aren’t being seen for a sick visit…. I didn’t like a tech asking me questions that the doctor should be talking with me about. I feel that creates a lack of communication and understanding on the doctors part as well as questions that a patient should be able to ask during this time. I even had to call back and ask for my contact prescription because it wasn’t given to me. This practice has become way more unorganized and way less personal for the patient and I can’t say if I will return or not.

The eye exam was very professional. However, they were just beginning with new staff in the eyeglass department. The trainee was not very skilled at her new job. There seem to be a lack of sufficient employees in the main office as well as in the eyeglass department. There were not many frames to choose from.

In a time with everyone is short staffed and overworked Nilsen Eye Care West make you feel you are the most important customer present. I switched from Grove Eye Care because they NO longer choose to answer the phone. Everything is automated. I hate that. Absolutely no customer service after you leave the office. I don't want to do business with a company that doesn't take phone calls. I think its just darn rude. You wont find that at Nilsen Eye Care West. Its the nicest office I have been to in a long time. Every single person from front end to the exam office and doctor are super nice and genuine. I dont know how they can allllllllllllllll be soooooooooo nice. they hire and train well i guess. I tell everyone about Nilsen Eye Care West !!!! I love your place I wish allllll service places where as delightful as your staff.

I truly love my experiences here. My only critique would be about looking at frames. The person assisting me was super nice and helpful, but I felt crowded and hovered over. She was making wonderful recommendations but I would have preferred to browse on my own as well.

Everyone was excellent! From check-in to check out, I received wonderful care and a personal touch. Dr. Jarrell and her assistant were thorough and efficient. I did not have a long wait when I arrived. Check out was backed up a bit, but again, the girls at the desk were sensitive and apologetic for that, and they did not rush my transactions when it was my turn at the counter. A great experience!

I find the new appointment policy to be incredibly stressful. Now I have four appointments sometime in the summer of next year at arbitrary times which will likely not work for our family. I asked to reschedule these appointments at the front desk when I was leaving and they said to do it when I got a text or phone call in a year. If you want to make appointments a year ahead of time it would be nice to ask the patient what day and time they would like.
