I have been going to Modern Eyes Optometry for 4 years. They have the best staff and Dr.s I have ever been to. They explain everything they do and why they are doing it in a simple to understand language. I have damage to my iris from the sun, UV damage, I never heard of that but they caught it. I love going to Modern Eyes! They were recommended to me when I went to the emergency room at 7:30 a.m. on a Saturday morning. The hospital contacted the staff at Modern Eyes and they had me come right over even though I was a new patient. They fit me in within a half hour of my arrival. That was 3 years ago and I have the greatest confidence in each doctor and staff person. The original problem reoccurred and I called the emergency number after hours. The doctor answered and met me at the office at 8:30 p.m. This is the group you want on your team with any type of eye situation. I never question or have a doubt that their patients are #1 to everyone at Modern Eyes!

From my past visit I can say that I enjoyed my time there. The staff is very welcoming - especially the assistants who initially see you before you go to your doctor. Dr. Kanji has been my family's eye specialist for 8 years now, and he is a kind and very helpful doctor who is eager to make sure you get the best out of your glasses. They let you take your time when picking out your frames, since they will be worn for at least a year, or until you need new ones. One of the women who helps place the order for your glasses even helped me pick a frame that would be the most functionally fitting for my eyes and still look good. Their actions clearly show that the interests of this clinic are not solely in eye care but in customer service as well.

I have been a client of his for some twenty years and do not foresee a change in the future. In fact, should he move away from the area, I would not end our relationship.

Dr. Kanji has been our family eye doctor since moving to Virginia in 2011. He and his wife (Dr. Pham) have given my family the utmost best care in optometry we've received in over two decades. (And as a military family which has lived from Asia to Africa, an nearly everywhere in between, we've seen our share of doctors.) Let me talk about the office setup... He has the absolute latest equipment and technology to care for his patients. Now just to have the latest and greatest technology isn't what is impressive, New technology can be intimidating for some patients, but not the case with Dr. Kanji - he and his staff break down each procedure into what it does and what to expect to put you completely at ease. New technology is also used by some individuals to make up for a lack of knowledge, understanding or skills. Again not the case with Dr. Kanji. Technology is a tool in his office to further aid and assist his patients and not a filler for some shortcoming as I have seen with others. We have seen his office grow technology-wise and his professionalism, knowledge and candor have always been of the highest caliber. I can say without a hesitation of doubt, that one of the best things our Primary Care Manager ever did for our family was to refer us to Dr. Kanji's practice. He's an Excellent Doctor, and Exciting Conversationalist, and a not-to-shabby football (soccer) player. ;)

Moved to a room and the Doctor came in w/in about 3 minutes and finished the full examination. All my options were well outlined and then I was fitted for new glasses and the staff even made some minor repairs on my current glasses so they would last until my new pair arrived.

the receptionist (Jordan) was rude & abrupt with dealing with me, I felt belittled just because I only have Tricare for my insurance, after my check up, she went to the optical area & told one of the ladies, that I only have Tricare. First of all, my husband served this country & risked his life during the war at the Gulf, I understand Tricare will not cover my glasses, but if you're treatment to your clients sucks , I wont go back there again. I can find other optical that will take Avesis and/or Tricare. I'm so dissatisfied & disappointed. The eye doctor who checked me was nice, helpfil & professional.

Modern Eyes Optometry is very likely, the best optometric office I've visited since relocating to this area. The office environment is comfortable, and the ladies at the front desk are pleasant and efficient. I visited with Dr. Kanji, who is young, hip, and armed with the latest in high tech optometric equipment. I have not met Dr' Pham or Dr. Pithwa, but I can't imagine Dr. Kanji partnering with anyone whom he does not hold in high regard. Dr. Kanji is well spoken and knowledgeable in his field, as well as a pleasure to get to know. He spends the time and gets to know you, while providing what I would deem the most comprehensive eye exam I've ever had. They even take your weight and blood pressure readings! Who does that?! If you are searching for a great place for your eyes to call home, I would suggest you give this office a shot.

This was my first visit. The exam was very thorough using up to date equipment. The office was well organized and extremely clean. Dr. Pham was excellent. Since my vision had only changed slightly since my last exam, she gave me the option of purchasing new glasses or keeping my old ones rather than push me toward new glasses. In summary, she is very professional, thorough, and fair.

Wow! The staff was well knowledged in the hi-tech equipment! I'm always greeted with warm welcomes from 3 or 4 people when I walk in the door. The selection of frames and lens options is almost overwhelming, until the staff answers any and all questions I may have. They even suggest what's covered under your insurance and FSA\HSA's to ease the stress of you trying to figure it all out. I won't go anywhere else for my exams and glasses. I have a pair of prescription Oakley sunglasses, and Oakley driving glasses that I wear everyday. My daughter got contact lenses, and they were most helpful! It was a great experience for her!

I have been seeing Dr. Kanji for many years. Everyone in the office is very pleasant and helpful. If it is necessary to see another doctor they take care of everything and make the appointment for you. Experienced, caring professional staff that will go out of their way to ease your anxiety and make you feel like you are their undivided attention. I was running late due to unforeseen circumstances and they made every effort to fit me in since they knew it was my only day off. Insurances are very tricky and the rules change annually. Fortunately, we always take major medical insurances. So if you have a medical eye complaint like floaters, dry eye, itching, red eye, eye pain than we can see regardless of your vision insurance. In these cases your office visit is billed to your medical insurance and you are responsible for your medical specialist copay. When in doubt just call us and one of our insurance experts can let you know if you can be seen.

We have made a huge investment in purchasing that technology along with a very small handful of optometrists in VA. I feel this should be addressed as it contains some very inaccurate information. The patient who this came from purchased glasses from us in 2013. At that time we were one of the early adopters of Freeform HD Custom made progressives in the area. The patient purchased a clear pair of progressives and a pair of progressive sunglasses and was completely satisfied with the vision. As with all new technology, the cost was higher than an outdated 1980's progressive. This year the patient returned and informed my staff that he did not want to spend that kind of money again. As much as our staff values the best possible vision for all patients they agreed to give him a product that he was comfortable purchasing. He was educated that it would not be the same high standard lens he was accustomed to in the full time wear progressive but it would be in the price range his wife agreed to. The patient got two pairs again - one as progressive sunglasses and the others as clear full time wear progressives. Vision was clear in both and the sunglasses were completely fine; however, the full time wear glasses were difficult to use in front of the computer. We call this 'peripheral distortion' in progressive eyeglasses that is common in non-freeform non-wide progressive lenses. Lesson learned by our staff: NEVER downgrade a patient from a digital freeform HD progressive. Instead it is better to not make the sale. To correctly address the comment made by the patient regarding "we tried to blame them", for starters we did not change the prescription. The patient was given the exact same prescription in each case. If the prescription was incorrect, why did he not complain about the sunglasses that were purchased at the same time as the first pair. The difference was that he "did not want to spend the same amount as last time, and wanted a less expensive product despite our staff saying that a downgrade in technology was not recommended. I will let the reader make the decision. Here is my analogy: "Let's say I purchase a 55' 4K television for $1500 for my living room and I go back to purchase a second television for my bedroom and I tell the salesperson that I want the same tv but I do not want to pay what I did last week. The salesperson says you have two options, you can get exact same tv for $1500 (what you paid last week) or you could get a tv for $1000 that is the same size as the one from last week but it has 720P resolution so it will not look as sharp as the 4K tv." That is exactly what happened when the patient opted to save money knowing that it was not the same technology as what he was used to. Now if that was Best Buy, they probably would have taken the tv back with a 15% re-stocking fee and sold it as an open box. But in our case, this was a made to measure product that cannot be resold to anyone else. So we can only throw them in the trash or donate them (which we did) to the Lions Club. You may ask what we did in this situation and I will tell you: When we asked the patient if it was fair for him to pay the difference between the technology product he originally paid for and what we were upgrading him to, I witnessed him say that he agreed it was fair. Our office agreed to eat the cost of the original pair of lenses and remake them for him with the better technology and he would only pay the difference in price (same as what Best Buy would do if upgrading from a 720P to the 4K tv). So, we restarted the job with the lab. Of course, his wife called not to long after and began to yell at everyone and stated that they should not have to pay anything since it was not their fault that they were made incorrectly. Really, you did not want to spend the same money as you previously did and wanted a less expensive product knowing that the vision would not be the same as what you were already wearing yet it is still our fault! At this point, we informed them not to worry we will take care of it for them. At our own expense, we re-made those lenses with the newest progressive technology even better than what the patient previously had at NO extra charge. Is there a such thing as fair? Is the patient always right? Was there a fair way to resolve this issue? Final outcome and what did we learn: 1. The patient got what he should have purchased from the beginning except he got away spending far less than what he should have. 2. Staff and doctors took time away from genuine, honest, deserving patients. 3. We learned never to downgrade a patient from a high quality progressive they are currently in, just to save them a few dollars. It's better they take their business elsewhere. 4. Patients that disrespect our staff and doctors will be inactivated from our database. Our staff are extremely valued at Modern Eyes Optometry. They work hard to make sure our patients have a good experience in our practice. Our more than 10,000 patients will back us on that. Moving forward, we wish the patient here and his wife all the best. There are many options for your eye care, ours is not one of them. We thank you deeply for no longer wanting to return. Our staff and doctors will sleep much better knowing that you will be taking your eye care needs elsewhere.

We are so sorry you feel that way. We went back and checked your insurance. Your insurance has fixed pricing on your lenses. At our practice, we have opted to only use branded products for our patients and not generics like other places. From our experience, it is better to provide the best visual outcome than sell products that we would not use ourselves or not give to our parents. In case you are unaware, there are three tiers with your progressive lenses: Good, Better, and Best. We would be more than happy re-pricing all three options for you along with our tiers of Crizal coating and branded Transitions.

I only wish he could be my family doctor too!!! Kudos's to all his office staff too. They are hand picked I am sure, for they do such a great job. I do not see anything he could change at this time to make me a happier patient. He seems like he is on top of all the new technologies that he can afford to put into his new location at the present time. I waited 45 minutes beyond my appointment time to see my optometrist. When my appointment ended and I was looking at eyeglass options, I was given incorrect information on cost because my insurance information was incorrectly entered when I first arrived, and had to be re-entered and new eyeglass costs discussed, caused a further delay, total time in office - 2 hours (partly my delay with glasses indecision.) My time is important and this was unacceptable.

Thanks for the feedback. It is responses like this that can improve our efficiency in the practice and improve our overall experience for patients. I am very sorry that you did not have a 5 star experience. I was able to go back and check our time logs for where we may have been off and yes you are correct that you did wait beyond your scheduled time to see me. Due to the extensive testing that is involved in our practice for both new and existing patients the times between scheduled time and the time when the doctor comes in is delayed. Your scheduled time was 3:30pm. We checked you in at 3:33pm (it is possible that you waited to check-in). The technician then measured the shape of your eyes using a wavefront analyzer. She then took an ultra wide field image (200 degrees) of your retina. Next she measured your intraocular pressure (IOP) using a non-puff no drops required device. The IOP was measured at 3:48pm (15 minutes after check-in). Vision with glasses and some eye health testing was conducted. Post-surgery I have been running a few minutes late (we have been trying to calculate the optimal number of patients that I can see since surgery without falling behind - my mobility is still below average). On the day of your visit, I was approximately 17 minutes behind schedule (sometimes at the end of the day I do fall behind regardless of mobility issues). We then reviewed your medical history, completed a refraction, and did the slit lamp exam. The timestamp states that the drops were put into your eyes at 4:27pm and we proceeded to the optical. I have recommended that my staff decrease my afternoon schedule by one patient to avoid similar delays. The two vision plans on file from 2014 indicated ineligibility. One of my front desk staff had left two voicemail messages requesting an update to your vision plan. With over 1400 frames in the office it is unfortunate that we could not find the right frame for you. We do understand that your time is valuable and we apologize for the delays that took place.

Seeing you and your wife at the end of an extremely busy week was a pleasure. We are very happy to take care of your medical eyecare needs. Your medical eye report was faxed to your PCP a few minutes after you left and you have a copy with you just in case it's not attached to your chart when you see your PCP. The good news is the office construction is under way and the expected completion date is January 8th. It has been two years and your vision is 20/20 for distance and near with both eyes. Fabulous results and no need to wear prescription eyeglasses. Excellent visit. I would say the only thing that needs explaining is why things are priced as they are at eye glass selection times. There seemed to be a few things automatically added on for which I was not consulted prior; like glare protection etc. Just a better upfront explanation.

I will be certain to remind staff to explain the importance of glare free protection for your lenses. Generally speaking, this is single handedly the best and most needed treatment for your lenses. It reduces and for many eliminates the glare from computer screens, headlights, taillights, and street lights when driving, and allows us to see clearly and comfortably in all visual situations. It also protects your lenses from scratches, smudges, dust and water. We use only Crizal treatments which provide the most complete protection against the invisible and often irreversible dangers of UV reflection.

When Dr.Pham and I decided on opening our own practice we agreed that we would NOT be that practice that would try to see as many patients as possible in an hour. Thanks for bringing that to our attention. Since you work at Sentara you may be aware that our front door is part of the "wind tunnel effect" on campus. When the door is loosened, it remains partially open and throws off the temperature in the office making patients uncomfortable in the waiting area. Sentara's maintenance team is aware of the situation and we have been informed that once we move into our new office at the end of this year this issue will likely be minimized due to the specialty doors we are going to install. Until then we all have to expend a little bit more energy on the 'pull'.

The people there are incredibly friendly. I loved the looks and feels of the office, and specially loved our doctor. The only thing I could possibly say thats negative (if at all) was that it was sort of stuffy in there...however I can justify that with the fact that it was recently cold and just started to warm up outside. I would have liked to have browsed the frames by myself rather than have someone bring me selections they picked for me. Also, since I have a limited budget and high health care costs, I would have like to have the price for each frame displayed so I could focus in on what would had worked better for me without having to ask for the price every time I tried to make a decision. I would have rather zeroed into my price range first and then chosen from there, other than choose a style first, ask for the price and then decide if I wanted to pay that price. Time selecting for me would have taken a very brief time span because I know what I want and wouldn't change even if ten people told me something else otherwise. Also, a lot of the frames that were lower in price were not displayed so they had to keep hunting out other styles from boxes that took even more time. I loved the staff and the atmosphere, just felt like I wanted a little bit more of helping myself to what was available.

The only negative from this particular visit was the wait time to be seen. Apparently there was an issue with a staff member's transportation as explained by the receptionist.
